Williamsport and the surrounding Appalachian Highlands provide an excellent base for your fall foliage viewing. Peak colors are typically seen in early November. State Parks in the vicinity provide access to unparalleled views of the fall colors as well as the opportunity to immerse yourself in color as you hike the spectacular trails under a kaleidoscope of color. Crisp fall weather with low temperatures near 40 degrees F and highs near 60 degrees F seems to enhance the clean, clear air in the rolling ridges of Pennsylvania. From the Williamsport Area, a number of spectacular day trips await. Lodging in and around Williamsport provides a central base for your activities. An easy warm up route to wet your appetite for fall scenery is State Route 87. State Route 87 can be accessed from Interstate 180 in Montoursville. Route 87 winds its way North in the scenic Loyalsock Valley. Awe inspiring views of steep, colorful slopes rising above Loyalsock Creek make you forget that you're only a short drive from the arts and culture of the Williamsport Area. Follow Route 87 to Forksville and hike in World's End State Park. If you've selected a warm fall day, don't forget to stop at Eder's Ice Cream on Route 87 in Farragut for a selection of ice cream that you will not soon forget! Once you've warmed up with a quick trip along Route 87, it's time to see some more rugged peaks in another of Lycoming Counties famed stream valleys. From Williamsport, follow Route 15 North to the Village of Trout Run. Bear right to Route 14 North and prepare to absorb stunning views of the Appalachians at their finest. Some of the most rugged mountains in Pennsylvania tower above the valley floor where Lycoming Creek meanders through forest and farmland. If your travel occurs on October 4th or 5th, 2008 plan to visit the Apple and Cheese Festival along Route 14 in Canton for a fine collection of local food and entertainment. Do you Want to experience an incredible walk, run, or bike ride through blazing fall colors? The Pine Creek Rail Trail extends 60.5 miles into some of the states most beautiful forest. The trail was selected by USA Today as one of their "10 great places to take a bike tour". The trails heritage as a railroad bed provides consistent and very gentle 2% grade. A variety of trail heads allow you to select the section of trail that you would like to explore. Incredible views of Pine Creek and the surrounding forests surrender to the towering vistas of the PA Grand Canyon. As you follow the trail through the canyon, walls of foliage engulf the sky. This is a truly a sight that you should not miss. Orange, Yellow, Red, and Waterfall - These are the colors of Ricketts Glen State Park in autumn. Truly spectacular in all seasons the 22 waterfalls of Ricketts Glen take on a completely different character in the fall. Millions of colored leaves add their cascade to the falling water and mix brilliant colors with the flowing water. Whirlpools and eddies that go unseen in other seasons are highlighted with splashes of color. Ricketts Glen is an easy 40 minute drive from Williamsport.
